Staring into the eyes of his own portrait, a beautiful youth undergoes a wondrous enchantment and a terrible curse: to be forever young. Dorian Gray explores obsession and sin, and the serious repercussions that follow.

Each February, a group of Bell drama students begins a journey of intensive rehearsal, theatrical exploration, and extraordinary commitment. Participation in the Sears Ontario Drama Festival has been a Bell High School tradition for many years past, providing an unforgettable experience to students. Founded in 1947, this year marks the Festival’s 64th season, and the publication of a new anthology of student and teacher-written plays and performance pieces from past seasons. Bell’s past productions include Molière’s Three Precious Maidens, an adaptation of the epic poem Beowulf, and Whitechapel, a student-written musical with a book by alumni Maya Bielinski, and music by alumni Don Rankin and Charles Hoppner. Last year Bell entered The Saki Project, a play adapted by Dylan On from the short stories of Edwardian author H. H. Munro. The production met critical acclaim, garnering four Awards of Excellence and two Certificates of Merit, taking home about half of the total awards for the evening.

At the present time, final rehearsals are under way for this year’s production, a one-act musical based on Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (book, music, and lyrics by Dylan On with additional music David Haberl), in which a young man experiences a universal desire – to be forever young. Bell competes at the District Level of the Festival on April 10th at Woodroffe High School.
