Forging New Links: Student Leaders Learning to Help Other Students

Friday, December 5, 2008 Ottawa, ON – Walking through the doors of a new school, a bigger school, for the first time can be very daunting for grade nine students, so in an attempt to make that transition easier the Link Crew was formed.

Link Crew is a high school transition program designed to help make grade nine students comfortable throughout their first year of high school.  The program is built on the belief that students can help students succeed, and to this end, trains grade eleven and twelve students to be Link Leaders. As positive role models, Link Leaders are motivators, mentors, leaders, and counsellors who guide all grade nines to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to high school and throughout their high school years.

Bell High School, with the support of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, will host approximately 325 students from across Eastern Ontario, including students from eight schools from the Ottawa valley. These students will be participating in the first annual, Student Link Conference on December 9 held at Bell. Students will engage in hands-on activities to develop their leadership and interpersonal skills.  These skills will be used to help grade nine students adjust to high school life.
The conference is facilitated by The Boomerang Project, a group of professional educators who have developed the Link Program, and will lead students and teachers in a variety of problem-solving and motivational activities. The goal is to provide new ideas, perspectives, and activities that Link Leaders can use with their grade nine Link groups. This opportunity to interact with other Link Leaders from other schools should prove to be exciting and energetic for student delegates. This leadership development conference is funded and coordinated by Student Success Principal Debra Ford, and Program Pathways Instructional Coach Kimberly Lovatt.
