The Gifted Program

At Bell, the aim of the program is to help those students with a high level of “general intellectual ability” to reach their potential not only intellectually but socially, physically and creatively. The program is a continuation of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s program for intellectually gifted students that begins in Grade 3.

The Curriculum

The Gifted Program is differentiated in a manner that is appropriate to the nature of each subject. Differentiation may occur in the content or teaching methods. The evaluation of student performance and the awarding of marks are based on the same criteria used in the Academic Program. As well, Gifted Program students write the same examinations as students in the Academic Program.

French Immersion and Advanced Placement

Bell High School offers a number of French Immersion courses at the Gifted level. In addition, a variety of senior classes offer preparation activities for Advanced Placement exams.

Extracurricular Activities

Each student in the Gifted Program is encouraged to participate in the wide variety of extracurricular activities that are offered and supervised by the teaching staff and community volunteers. Many of the students who are in the Gifted Program are members of school teams, student council, clubs, drama groups, band and choir. In addition, students in the Grade 9 Gifted program may participate in our Leadership Camp with a skills-based focus that encourages team-building, communication and organization.

Cooperative Education

Through Cooperative Education courses, students explore career opportunities, extend their knowledge, apply what they have learned in school and enhance their career portfolio. Bell High School Coop students have had very rewarding work placements in the Computer Engineering department of General Dynamics, Bells Corners Dentistry, National Research Council and Lynwood Animal Hospital, to name a few.

Students are encouraged to take as many courses at the Gifted level as possible. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers and counsellors to discuss appropriate course selection.
