Department of English, ESL and Modern Languages

Heads: John Cook, Jim Risk

Mr. Jim Risk Mr. Jim Risk is one of the very passionate heads of the English department.

The English Department offers all the compulsory English courses at the college, university, and gifted levels. All students are required to take one core English course in each grade in order to graduate. Elective courses include EMS3O (Media Studies) and EWC4U (The Writer's Craft).

We run popular AP sessions starting in Grade 11, and several of our students write the AP Literature exam in their Grade 12 year.

The Modern Language Department offers both core and immersion French at the academic level from Grade 9 through to Grade 12. We also offer core French at the college level. Several of our students write the AP French exam each year. We also offer Latin in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

The English as a Second Language Department offers the complete range of ESL courses, from AO through to EO.

We are an experienced, dynamic, creative department. We all love to read. We love grammar. (Well, most of us. You can spot which ones by the "I Love Grammar" tattoos (well, enough about that.) We take trips to Stratford and the National Gallery. A few of our classes get their tea leaves read each year and occasionally a student gets good news. Our students enter writing contests and do well. Many of these students have tattoos now too. One of our classrooms is covered in highly literate graffiti. We can sing. (Well, one of us can. Best not to ask the rest.) We have book clubs. We are all very friendly most of the time.
