BTW

Hello,

Just one more week before the holidays begin. I am sure you will all agree that the semester continues to pass us by very quickly.

Hello Dolly has been a resounding success. With its last performance night tonight, each evening from Wednesday through Friday has seen packed houses take in this wonderful musical. Congratulations to Mr. Perry Van Allen for his tremendous work on all aspects of the production. Very worthy of mention is the fact that the majority of the costumes for the show including the myriad of wonderful hats and wigs worn by the performers were hand-made/sewn by Mr. Van Allen himself. Congratulations as well to his supporting cast of teachers including Mr. Sparks (lights/audio), Mr. Young (set design), Mrs Headley & Ms. Alice Jones (wardrobe directors), Mr. Stanutz (pit crew), Mr. Spidell (food for cast & crew) and Mrs. Davidson and Ms. Bradely (ticket sales). And to our student performers…bravo on a wonderful show for our school and community. Once again, the amount of time and effort that has gone into the preparation phases of getting this show ready for stage is remarkable. Literally, hundreds and hundreds of hours and for this I thank each and every performer for their tremendous dedication. Special mention goes out to Stephanie Jones in her lead role as Dolly for her hard work in preparing for the show.

This is a reminder for students and parents of our next Opportunity Room (the OC) that will be taking place on January 5, 2010 immediately upon our return from holidays. While typically held on the last school day of each month, this last one of semester one is in a different place because we wanted to avoid that part of the semester where students will be focusing on summative evaluations in their courses.

Hello Dolly still on tonight!

Hello,

After much discussion it has been decided that “the show must go on!” With an inability to reschedule these types of performances, the Hello Dolly production will occur this evening and begin at the regularly scheduled time.

Enjoy the show!

Exam schedule/BTW/Junior Math hwk help

Hello,

The January examination schedule is now posted. Please check the dates of your child’s exams and be sure that they are prominently posted. In support of student success, all students will be provided with a minimum of time and a half to complete their exams. This means for example that students writing an exam scheduled to be completed in two hours will be provided three hours to complete. Just as a reminder, there are no regular classes during the exam period.Â

Is your child currently enrolled in grade 9 or 10 mathematics? Are they experiencing difficulty? Do they frequently have questions that are difficult to answer? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, please read below:

Homework Help is a pilot project that started this year and is funded by the Ministry of Education. Â The goal of the project is to help all grades 7 through 10 students improve and succeed in math. Â The OCDSB is 1 of only 15 school boards in Ontario selected to participate. Â To date, we have about 50 000 students in Ontario registered, and about 400 – 600 students using the site each night.

The site, located at https://homeworkhelp.ilc.org, offers free online math tutoring by Ontario certified math teachers. Â As well as the free tutoring, there are other valuable math resources that can be accessed 24/7. Â These include various types of interactive tutorials by grade and topic, a virtual locker of all previous tutoring sessions, a calculator and a glossary of math terms. Â The glossary of terms is great since it has definitions, illustrations and examples for many of the words!

Anyone can create an account, including students, parents and teachers. Â Students need an access code for their initial login: OCDSB23009. Â Parents and teachers can access the site as a guest and can take advantage of all of the resources except the tutoring. Â Please check out the site and see what it has to offer! Â As well, please encourage your students to sign up!!!

The feedback that we have had from students and parents is extremely positive. Â Parents are loving it since it gives them a resource to refer to so that they can continue to help their son or daughter succeed in math. Â In fact, Kathleen Wynne (the Minister of Education) is speaking tonight in Ottawa on the importance of parents getting more involved in the education of their children.

We hope this will prove a valuable resource for students and parents.

Do you have questions about Assessment & Evaluation as a parent? As part of the OCDSB Speakers’ Series you will want to attend the presentation by Professor Garfield Gini-Newman on Thursday December 10, 2009 beginning at 7 p.m. at Canterbury High School. Professor Gini-Newman has spoken widely at conferences in Ontario on brain research, curriculum design and effective assessment practices. It will be both informative and interesting. Seating availability will be done on a first come, first served basis.

It is a pleasure to inform you that tickets for Hello Dolly, Bell’s musical for this year are now on sale at a price of $15 for adults and $10 for students. Performances will take place on each of Dec 9, 10, 11, and 12. It will be a super show and one that you will not want to miss! If you are interested in ordering tickets, please send in money with your child if they attend. If you do not have a child at the school please feel free to vist the main office any day between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.Â

Finally, please find below this weeks version of Bell This Week to help with your planning.
