BTW

Hello,

There remain two weeks and one day of regular classes. This means that the last day for regular classes is June 15, 2009. Exams begin on June 16, 2009. All students have received a copy of the exam schedule and this document may also be found on this websites main page. If you have questions pertaining to exam dates and times please feel free to visit this calendar.

As teachers wind down the semester, students find themselves immersed in summative evaluations. While these evaluations have taken place in some courses, they continue and will be upcoming in others. These evaluations help to make up the 30% summative portion of student evaluation in each of their courses and provide every student with the opportunity to showcase for their teachers the skills and knowledge they have acquired over the course of the semester.

Thanks for you ongoing support. Please find attached this weeks copy of Bell This Week.

BTW/CS Hour Opportunities

Hello,

Where is the time going? We have blasted through May and there remain only three instructional weeks before exams which begin in June 16, 2009. Students are busy completing summative tasks/projects in their classes and it can be a very stressful time for them. Thanks to all of you for your gracious support in working with school staff as we work to best minimize these stress levels for students.

Community Service Hours Opportunity

The MS Society, Ottawa Chapter is gearing up for the 2009 RONA MS Bike Tour. This year the RONA MS Bike Tour will take place on Saturday August 8 and Sunday August 9. The RONA Bike Tour is a 65 km to 180 bike tour in support of individuals and their families linving with Multiple Sclerosis. There are over 600 cyclists who participate in either the one day or two day event. This year’s tour mraks our 20th anniversary. We are looking for individuals for the Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday that will assist at Kemptville College and Carleton University. This is a super opportunity for students to accumulate as many as 32 hours over the four days while giving back to a community event in support of many individuals. An ideal fit for community service hours!!!

If you are interested in helping out and earning hours, please read the attachments below and follow the instructions re: registration.

In future and to facilitate access to community service hour opportunities for students, please feel free to refer to Bell High School’s website for community service hour opportunites in its own special area off of the main page.

Parents of Grads – Safety info. for you

Hello,

The completion of High School is an exciting time for students. Activities begin and over time become known as ‘rites of passage’ in the eyes of students, but sometimes these activities  morph into activities with safety concerns for our students, your children.

It is for this reason that I share the following two attachments with you concerning Car Rallies and Tequila Sunrise events. In each case, neither one of these activities are sanctioned or sponsored in any way, shape, or form by Bell HS or the OCDSB.

It has been shared with graduating students that our wish for them as they reach the pinnacle of graduation, that they make appropriate, safe choices as they plan for their end of year celebrations.

Bell This Week

Hello,

What a week. Congratulations to Mr. Tim Stanutz and his music students for successfully hosting students as part of a SEVEC exchange from Bridgetown, N.S. These students from down east enjoyed a full week of “Bruin Heaven” as our visitors. They grew and preformed together on Thursday night celebrating friendship and music together. Students from Bell HS will be travelling to N.S. as part of this exchange in upcoming weeks.

Thanks so much to everyone for their support of this years pancake breakfast in support of the United Way. Congratulations to Mrs. Alison Green and student leader Sandra Noble for mobilizing their team of teacher and students volunteers as well as rounding up the tremendous community support from organizations such as Starbucks, Metro, Fortune Farms, The Butchery, and Aramark Foods. Over 500 breakfasts were served over the morning and a cheque for $1650.00 was happily presented to Jeff Turner, United Way representative. We are already in the planning stages for next year!

Coffee House ran this past Friday evening and was a resounding success. Thanks go out to Mrs. Lorraine Sutterlin for organizing this years event along with student volunteers. Many groups successfully performed to an enthusiastic audience of students and parents. All performances were very well received. Â

Have an awesome week!

Swine Flu Update/Pancake Breakfast/BTW

Hello,

Swine Flu has certainly caused us reason for concern in our communities. Attached, please find information from Ottawa Public Health as a resource for you in hopefully answering some of the questions you may be having at this time.Â

A reminder that this Friday May 8, 2009 Bell HS will be hosting its 20th annual Pancake Breakfast in the school cafetorium from 7:30 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. With a tremendous amount of support from community partners including Leob/Metro in Bells Corners, Maple Leaf Foods, Aramark Foods, Fortune Farms, Starbucks, and HOT 89.9 the planning team is excited at the prospect of bringing you perhaps the biggest and best morning of the past 20 years. Please accept this cordial invitation to join us for breakfast in support of the United Way.

This past week our SEARS play was presented at the school during the day for students and the evening for our school community. The Saki Project based upon short stories from H.H. Munro was performed and very well received by many. Thanks to all who attended for your generous support in fostering student success in the Arts.

As the timetable process continues it is important to note that based upon our current projections for the Fall that all of our current staff will be returning next year. This is great news! Over the next few weeks we will continue to put together the timetable for students for next year and as parents you should have already received a course choice selection sheet from your child/ren showing a list of the courses they have chosen for next year, in no particular order. A final gentle reminder for those students returning that sumbmission of option sheets is past due. If you want some guarantee of getting your first choices in terms of courses for next year it is imperative that you submit your option sheet at the beginning of next week.

This past Friday Bell HS’s Athletic Association presented its annual Sports Marathon. A large number of students partcipated throughout the day in a myriad of activites and remained active for the entire day. Special thanks go out to Mr. Maris Stasko for once again putting together a wonderful day for students as well as special mention to student organizers Adam Thomson and Courtney Wilson for their painstaking efforts as well.
